The Devastating Earthquake in Haiti - 8/12
As you may already be aware, on Saturday, August 14, the south of Haiti was struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which caused extensive property damage and loss of lives. The full extent of the earthquake's effect is still unknown as the death toll continues to rise, 1300 and counting. This devastation occurred as we were preparing for the school opening for the 2021-2022 academic year.
While we are fortunate that no loss of life has been reported in the Fauge community, our IEBCF school building sustained significant structural damage. A portion of the building has collapsed which will likely require us to knock down and rebuild possibly half of the school building. While we are saddened by the damage to our building and its impact on our ability to serve the community, we are even more heartbroken to learn that the majority of the homes in the surrounding area have been either completely destroyed or severely damaged. This community is going to require a lot of assistance to rebuild. Please keep us and the Fauge community in your thoughts and prayers as we explore ways to provide short and long-term assistance to the community.
We will continue to work with our team on the ground to complete a thorough assessment of the current situation and ways to help meet the immediate needs.

Welcome to Haiti
Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti (République d'Haïti ; Repiblik Ayiti) is a Caribbean country. Along with the Dominican Republic, it occupies the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antillean archipelago. Ayiti (land of high mountains) was the indigenous Taíno or Amerindian name for the mountainous western side of the island. The country's highest point is Pic la Selle, at 2,680 metres (8,793 ft). The total area of Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) and its capital is Port-au-Prince. Haitian Creole and French are the official languages.
Haiti's regional, historical and ethnolinguistic position is unique for several reasons. It was the first independent nation in Latin America and the first black-led republic in the world when it gained independence as part of a successful slave rebellion in 1804.[4] Despite having common cultural links with its Hispano-Caribbean neighbors, Haiti is the only predominantly Francophone independent nation in the Americas. It is one of only two independent nations in the Americas (along with Canada) that designate French as an official language; the other French-speaking areas are all overseas départements, or collectivités, of France.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas. Contrary to popular belief, however, it is not the poorest in the Western Hemisphere.
The Impact of the Earthquake on Education in Haiti
By some accounts, the massive earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 destroyed more than 8000 schools, public and private, including some of the buildings portrayed above. You can make a significant difference in the life of the students of Haiti by helping us to provide them with a safe and well equipped place to learn. We believe that every student deserves a well equipped environment to learn.
We also believe that Haitians living abroad and friends of Haiti can make a significant difference in the lives and conditions of Haitian students whose schools were destroyed by the earthquake. What Can Education Do
The earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 highlighted the dire need for education in this country. By some accounts, as much as 53% of the people in Haiti are illiterate. This rate of illiteracy is much higher in the country side of Haiti where even primary schools (grade schools) are not always available or equipped to provide students with a decent education. The earthquake has caused further damage to an education system that was already shaky.
At Torch of Hope, we believe that education is the cornerstone to building bright futures and stronger communities. That is one of the reasons why we have a passion to see education blossom in Haiti, particularly in the country side area of the country where well equipped schools are not readily available.
